One of the two types is conditional: either the modern hotels, mainly located in Colombo (the informal capital of the country) and on the coast; or the colonial era, where the special colony of past centuries has continued. There are also many guest houses throughout the island, as well as possible private accommodation. If accommodation is planned in the guest house, it is necessary to specify in advance the presence of window-based mosquito nets, air conditioner and hot water.
There is no formal hotel classification system in Sri Lanka, but tourist operators and owners often display their own level of stars, depending on the quality and quantity of services provided. This assessment is often slightly overstated and not in line with reality, so the details of the service are better clarified in advance when the number is booked.
The cost of living in Sri Lanka most often includes breakfast and dinner, a full boarding may be ordered for additional charges, and some hotel complexes are all on the system (all inclusive). When the numbers are low, the choice of dishes may be substantially restricted. If a tourist stops on a private villa, it is usually an opportunity to form a menu on its own, and the cook will prepare any desired dish.

The opening of the first six-star hotel complex in the country is planned for the deployment of diving amateurs.
